How we handle information, how we protect children, and what we are and are not. Written to be read, rather than to be scrolled past.
Who we are. Khula Pathways is an unincorporated project working in KuGompo City, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was started by someone who grew up in KuGompo and whose father still lives there, and who now spends most of her time in the United Kingdom. For data protection purposes she is the controller. Contact: hello@khulapathways.org.
What we collect. Only what you choose to type into one of the forms on this site, and only when you send it:
How it reaches us. The forms do not send anything themselves. They open a message in your own email application with the details filled in, and nothing is transmitted until you press send. If you do not press send, we never receive it and it is never stored anywhere.
Why we hold it. To reply to you and to keep track of people who have offered support. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests — you contacted us and would reasonably expect a reply — and, where you have asked to be listed as a founding supporter, your consent.
How long we keep it. For as long as the conversation is live, and then for as long as it remains relevant to the programme. We review this annually. Ask us to delete your details and we will, without argument.
Who we share it with. Nobody. We do not sell, rent, trade or share your information with third parties. We do not run advertising. There is no mailing list you can be added to without asking.
Where it is stored. Mail to hello@khulapathways.org is forwarded by Cloudflare Email Routing into a mailbox hosted by Microsoft in the United Kingdom and European Union. Both act as processors on our behalf; neither is given your details for any purpose of their own.
Your rights. You can ask us for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, ask us to restrict what we do with it, or object to us holding it at all. Write to the address above and we will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children's information. We do not collect information about children through this website, and we ask you not to send any. The form for parents, teachers and schools says so plainly: no names, ages, schools or photographs of any child. If you send us a child's details unprompted, we will delete them and tell you we have done so.
Khula Pathways works with children. If protecting a child ever conflicts with running the programme, protecting the child wins. That is not a difficult decision and we are not going to pretend it is.
This is an interim statement, not a finished policy. We are publishing it now because saying nothing while we work on it would be worse. It will be replaced by a full policy, written with people who do this professionally, before any child is enrolled.
Khula Pathways is not a registered charity in the United Kingdom, and not a registered non-profit organisation in South Africa. It is a project. Registration is intended and is the next step.
That means there is no Gift Aid, no tax relief and no charity number, and we do not solicit donations as a charity. Nothing on this site should be read as implying otherwise. If a message from anyone claiming to represent Khula Pathways tells you different, it is not from us.
Related interests. The later stages of the pathway — vocational training, first employment and management progression — are intended to run through property and hospitality businesses connected to the founder. This is deliberate: it is what makes the end of the pathway real rather than aspirational. It is also a related-party arrangement, it will be disclosed in full to every funder, and it will be governed accordingly once a board exists.
Who runs it. The founder grew up in KuGompo and her father still lives there, but she is currently based mostly in the United Kingdom. We believe a programme like this should be led and governed day to day by people who are in KuGompo every day. There is no local board yet, and building one is the next piece of work. We would rather state that than be asked.
